Michael Miglietta beautifully jarring 100% insomniac artistic deep diving fuel... i painted my best workflow during Stratos, had to loop the album twice for maximum enjoyment. Favorite track: Stratos (live).

about

BANGER ALERT BANGER ALERT BANGER ALERT BANGER ALERT

'Acid Horse 23’ represents M.L. Deathman – aka former Teeth of the Sea man Mat Colegate - at a period of transition. A series of Bandcamp releases, small cassette runs and a debut album, 2022’s ‘LIFEFORCE’, behind him, by the time of this festival set Colegate had begun to look to improvisation as a way to move his sound forward. Drawing on his past as a member of Brighton based free improv unit Medicine and Duty, he set to work unlearning some of his more restrictive habits and pushing himself back toward the in-the-moment composition practices that had previously shaped his sound. The results, captured here raw and unedited on a wet day by the banks of the Kennet and Avon canal, in front of a word-of-mouth audience gathered for 2023’s Acid Horse festival, were a moment never to be repeated, as Colegate takes his compositions and stretches them into unfamiliar shapes, rolling with mistakes, moulding rhythms into new forms and pulling strange-coloured lightning out of the air.

From the tangled hand percussion of ‘Again Personal Rainstorm’ to the fifth-world cacophony of ‘Stratos’, taking in ‘Dig Two Holes’ combination of acid bounce and warped insectoid choir, and the thrumming, spiralling ‘A Mouthful of Dragonflies’, ‘Acid Horse 23’ evokes desert-bound ceremonies in the fuselages of crashed aircraft, shaky VHS-rips of long-forgotten exploitation films, burning forests, vampire bats and the corpses of abandoned machinery. Colegate forces himself and his small arsenal of noise boxes into vortices of stretched out drone and murderous, hypnotic rhythm, bringing to mind precursors from Jon Hassell to 23 Skidoo; Wolf Eyes to Underground Resistance, leaving behind an exhilarated audience and a hole in the sky the size of a fist.
